126th Annual Memorial Day Parade

If you have ever been to Portsmouth Virginia you know we are steeped in History and surrounded by Military. It's a great place to live! I grew up here, my husband is a Navy transplant but now calls Portsmouth home too. My Dad grew up in Portsmouth so I know a lot about our town and could probably be a tour guide! One of the things we look forward to every year is the Memorial Day Parade (the oldest in the nation), it's small by comparison but so is our town.

This year was no exception so we found a nice spot in the shade and proceeded to cheer for anyone who passed by! It always chokes me up when the WWII Veterans pass by, their group keeps getting smaller.

This year I was impressed by the amount of young people who are in the High School ROTCs. It seems to me that the youth of our generation are too self obsessed and for the most part, lazy. So to see that so many still think the military is a great choice made me feel good.

Here are a few highlights from our Parade!

Shameless picture of my Son's school float!

I hope whatever you did yesterday you also took the time to remember all of the fallen solders and sailors. They are what helped shape our Great Country and what Memorial Day is all about.

Have a great week!
Kathy

  3. Kathy,

Thank you so much for sharing your photographs and narration. This is what I miss most about being on a farm - no downtown area or sense of community. Your post was so well done I feel like I got to attend a parade!
